Founded in 1919, Instonians Rugby Football Club is one of Ulster’s most historic and respected rugby clubs. Originally established as the Old Boys’ club of the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, Instonians has grown into a modern, open, and inclusive rugby club while remaining deeply rooted in tradition. The club now forms a major part of Instonians Sports Club, alongside cricket and hockey, all based at the outstanding Shaws Bridge sports complex, widely regarded as one of the best multi-sport facilities in Ireland.
Today, Instonians Rugby is a thriving community club with over 700 rugby members, spanning mini, youth, senior, and women’s rugby. Over the past five years, the club has experienced significant growth and progress — tripling the size of the minis section, building strong youth squads, introducing and expanding a women’s section, and establishing a successful 4th XV. Alongside on-field development, Instonians has grown its non-playing membership, delivered a highly successful schools outreach programme reaching around 1,000 children per year, and developed one of the strongest social media followings of any rugby club in Ireland.
This growth has been underpinned by a clear long-term vision and strong club values: for everyone, family, fellowship, folklore, fun, and forever. Following the successful execution of a five-year strategic plan, the club’s 1st XV achieved four promotions in four seasons and now competes in the Energia All-Ireland League, continuing its journey towards the highest levels of Irish club rugby. As a non-profit, volunteer-led club, Instonians Rugby is committed to sustainability, player development, and community engagement — ensuring the club continues to thrive for current members and future generations alike
