About Mini RUGBY
Mini Rugby at Instonians is where the journey begins.
The club has a long and proud association with introducing children to rugby in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. Thanks to the foresight of Des O’Donnell, one of the pioneers of mini rugby in Ulster during the early 1970s, Instonians was at the forefront of growing the game for young players.
Our Mini Rugby section focuses on enjoyment and confidence, fundamental rugby skills and teamwork and sportsmanship. Many players who have gone on to represent Ulster and Ireland first pulled on rugby boots at mini level, and we are proud of the role we continue to play in nurturing young talent.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can anyone join Mini Rugby?
Yes — Mini Rugby is open to all children, regardless of experience. Whether they are completely new to rugby or have played before, everyone is welcome.
Do children need previous rugby experience?
No. Many children try rugby for the first time at Mini level. Sessions focus on fun, basic skills, and confidence.
What does my child need to bring?
Rugby boots (moulded studs recommended), a gumshield (essential), a water bottle, and weather-appropriate sports clothing. If your child doesn’t have boots yet, we may be able to provide spare boots to try, where available.
Is Mini Rugby safe?
Yes. Mini Rugby follows age-appropriate rules with limited or non-contact formats depending on age. Player welfare is always the top priority.
